FAQ – Newborn & Family Photography

How long does a newborn session last?

Each newborn session is completely unique and guided by your baby’s needs. I schedule just one session per day at my Buckinghamshire home studio, so you’ll never feel rushed. I allow up to four hours of studio time to ensure there’s plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddles. Creating a calm, relaxed experience for both you and your little one.

When is the best time to photograph my baby in the newborn style?

The ideal time to photograph your baby is between 5-21 days old. I totally understand this time period can be quite busy with appointments so we can provisionally book in a session roughly 10 days after your due date and I am flexible with this. If your baby is overdue, just let me know and I will try my best to accommodate.

What if my baby is older than 21 days?

We can still do newborn poses up to 6 weeks old, but as your baby may be more alert, it may take a little longer to get the sleepy shots. We will, however, be able to get plenty of lovely awake shots.

If your baby is quite a bit older, I also offer 'sittier' shoots for babies six months plus.

Is Newborn photography safe?

Yes! Your baby’s safety and comfort are always my highest priority.

I am fully trained in safe handling, positioning and hygiene practices as well as Peadiatric First Aid. Every session is entirely baby-led and guided by your newborn’s comfort.

I focus on natural, self-supporting poses and will never force your baby into an uncomfortable or unnatural position. If a pose doesn’t feel right for your baby on the day, we simply move on. Their comfort always comes first.

The studio environment is kept warm and calm ensuring your baby remains comfortable throughout the session.

What if my baby is jaundice or has flaky skin?

Jaundice, flaky skin and milk spots are all totally normal things for newborns to experience.

I fully appreciate you may not want these to be showing in your final pictures and this is easy for me to remove in editing, keeping the babies natural tones and delicate details intact.

What should we wear for the newborn session?

For the perfect family pictures, I recommend neutral tones such as cream, white or gentle pastels. These colours photograph beautifully and won’t cast unwanted tones onto your baby’s delicate skin.

Simple, solid fabrics work best. Avoid bold patterns, logos or bright colours.

I will provide everything for your newborn to wear for the shoot, however, if you have a sentimental item you would love to include, you’re very welcome to bring it along.

Are parents and siblings included in the photographs?

The more the merrier!

Family pictures create the best memories, I will aim to get some photos of your newborn and their sibling (if applicable) as well as with the parents.

The photos can be taken at the start of the session to keep any younger guests from getting too distracted or bored. I have a selction of games for toddlers to keep them entertained when they're not involved in the pictures.

Can I bring my older child to the session?

Absolutely! I will aim to get photographs of the little ones together and everyone as a family. My studio has a kitchen area where siblings can relax and play with some toys while we photograph baby.

If however, your toddler chooses not to be photographed on the day, that is absolutely fine.

Weather permitting, there is also a playground a 2 minute drive from my house, some clients may wish to take the older sibling out once the family photographs are finished, leaving mum and baby at the studio.

Can I buy a gift voucher?

Yes, of course! Please send me an email to kate@florencejoanphotography.co.uk and I will arrange this for you.
