When Is The Best Age For Baby Photos?
One of the most common questions parents ask when planning professional photography is: “When is the best age for baby photos?”
The truth is, there are several beautiful stages during your baby’s first year that are perfect for capturing timeless memories. Each stage offers something completely unique, from the sleepy calm of newborn days to the joyful personality of milestone sessions.
As a newborn and baby photographer based in Ivinghoe, I welcome families from Tring, Aylesbury, Berkhamsted and surrounding Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire areas who want to preserve these fleeting moments.
Newborn Stage (5–21 Days Old)
The newborn stage is often considered the most popular time for baby photography. During the first two to three weeks after birth, babies are naturally sleepy and curl comfortably into gentle poses.
This stage is ideal for capturing:
- delicate features and tiny details
- peaceful expressions
- soft wrapped portraits
- parent and sibling images
Newborn sessions are calm, unhurried and styled with neutral or pastel tones to create timeless photographs that never go out of style.

Tummy Time Stage (3–4 Months)
At around three to four months, babies begin lifting their heads during tummy time and showing early smiles and expressions.
Although this stage is less commonly photographed professionally, it can create beautiful natural portraits that highlight growing awareness and connection.
Sitter Stage (6–9 Months)
The sitter stage is one of the most joyful times for baby photography. Once your baby can sit confidently without support, but before crawling, they are often full of personality and engagement.
This stage is perfect for:
- giggles and bright expressions
- chubby cheeks and baby rolls
- interaction with simple props or textures
- milestone celebration photographs
Sessions at this age are usually shorter and playful, resulting in vibrant and expressive images.

First Birthday Stage (12 Months)
Turning one is a huge milestone. Many families choose photography sessions at this stage to celebrate their baby’s first year.
These sessions can include:
- simple portrait setups
- cake smash photography
- family portraits
- standing or walking milestone moments
First birthday sessions capture the transition from baby to toddler in a meaningful and memorable way.
So… When Is The Best Age?
There isn’t just one “best” age, it depends on the type of memories you want to preserve and your person preference
- Choose newborn photography to capture the very beginning, sleepy vibes and gentle posing
- Choose sitter sessions for personality, joy and natural expressions
- Choose first birthday sessions to celebrate milestones, make a mess with a smash cake or encourage them to play with a balloon, both can be very entertaining and engaging for photographs.
Many families choose multiple sessions throughout the first year to create a beautiful visual story.
